PayPal Pay in 4: Is There a Late Fee?

Short version: no. PayPal Pay in 4 charges no late fee and no interest — it is one of only two major pay-in-4 plans in our fee table with a $0 late fee, alongside Affirm. That does not make a missed payment free of consequences. The amount is still owed, and how you handle the miss decides whether it stays a non-event.

What PayPal charges — and what it does not

Pay in 4 splits a purchase into four payments: the first is due at purchase, then one every two weeks. The plan carries 0% APR and PayPal does not charge a late fee when a payment is missed. There is no grace-period clock to beat because there is no fee waiting at the end of it. Compare that with the $7–$16.95 late fees in the Klarna and Sezzle guides — on fees alone, PayPal's plan is the gentlest in the table.

What a missed payment still does

The balance does not pause because the fee is $0. A missed automatic payment leaves that installment due, and unpaid Pay in 4 balances can affect your ability to use Pay in 4 — and potentially other PayPal services — until you catch up. PayPal can also retry the charge, which is where the real-world cost usually lands: a retry that hits an empty bank account can trigger your bank's own fees even though PayPal charged nothing. The plan is not the risk. The empty account underneath it is.

PayPal Pay in 4 and your credit score

PayPal may run a soft credit check when you apply, which does not affect your score, and Pay in 4 payment activity is not reported to the credit bureaus — on-time payments do not build your file, and a late one does not directly mark it. That is the opposite trade from Affirm, which charges no late fee either but reports its plans. Our 2026 credit-score guide lines up what each provider actually reports.

How to fix a missed PayPal payment fast

One, make the missed payment manually in your PayPal account instead of waiting for a retry to find the money. Two, check the remaining schedule — three more charges are already queued, every two weeks. Three, look at your other apps before you relax: a $0 fee at PayPal next to a $16.95 fee at Sezzle means your payoff order should not treat the two plans as equals. The free stacking audit puts every plan on one calendar so the gentle plan stops hiding the expensive ones, and Pay in 4 vs. credit card runs the same purchase the other way.
