Afterpay Missed Payment: Fees and How to Catch Up

Afterpay's pitch is simple: four interest-free payments, every two weeks. The catch is what happens when one of those payments misses. Here is the current fee structure, verified October 2026.

The late fee

Afterpay charges up to $8 per missed installment. Total late fees per order are capped at the lower of 25% of the original order value or $68. On orders of $40 or less, a single late fee applies, capped at 25% of the order. Note: one widely cited source describes a two-tier structure ($10 on the first miss for orders over $40, plus $7 more if still unpaid a week later). Afterpay's US terms should be checked directly, as published summaries differ.

The 10-day window

Afterpay gives you 10 days of grace in practice before the fee machinery matters most. But do not coast: Afterpay suspends your account after missed payments until the balance is settled, which means no new plans and no shuffling.

What Afterpay does not do

Standard Pay in 4 activity is not reported to Experian, Equifax, or TransUnion. A late Afterpay payment does not directly touch your credit score. The exception, as always: a balance sent to collections can appear on your file.

The catch-up playbook

Pay the missed installment now, in the app. Then look at your next two auto-charge dates and confirm the money will be there. Afterpay's longer "Pay Monthly" product exists in some markets with a different fee structure, so make sure you know which product you are on before assuming the Pay in 4 rules apply.
